Following Doctor's Orders

Beginning very early this past Saturday morning, Bandit started having diarrhea.  It didn't affect his eating or drinking, and his energy level was just the same.  We kept an eye on it, and when it didn't seem to be letting up we started feeding him rice, chicken broth, and plain chicken pieces.  Fortunately, for him, it never got profuse or problematic to a great extent, and fortunately, for us, he never had any accidents in the house.  When it was apparent that his altered diet wasn't taking care of the problem I took a fecal sample and carted it off to the vet's office Monday morning.  A couple hours later we found out his sample contained no parasites or microscopic bugs, so the vet wanted to see Bandit.  He had an appointment very soon after that. Everything looked good physically and he had no elevated temperature, so Dr. Sharma thinks he picked up colitis somewhere.  Bandit's taking the prescription drugs Flagyl and asulfidine to get his colon back on track and needs to take it easy for five days (walks are okay but no running).

"Too much information, Mama"
The "Diarrhea Diet" which he tends to wolf down, so that's good
So far everything seems to be working, and last night was the first night he didn't wake up between 1:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. for an outside potty break.

Bandit hadn't been weighed in a long while and he currently weighs 33 pounds, so he gained three from the last check.

I'm wondering if perhaps he picked up the colitis from licking raw chicken residue off a cutting board in the dishwasher ...?  Dr. Sharma seems to think he could have picked it up just about anywhere and may have gotten into something we're unaware of, from other animal droppings at the park, etc.

While giving me the evil eye, "Please, Mama, don't take away my dishwasher diving"

Poor Bandit! No fun at all. Hopefully things will be back to normal (in every way) soon!

So sorry about the diarrhea. I would know, being that Simba has one of the most sensitive stomachs I have ever dealt with. I have spent whole night up with him cuddled up by the door waiting for that moment to go outside, otherwise, we have accidents it gets so bad. I am so happy that you guys didn't have that bad of a problem. I hope Bandit continues to feel better each day!

Yucky! Sorry you have a tummy ache, Bandit. Once, I ate too much compost from the garden and got really sick. I got the chicken and rice diet too, Yumm-O! Hope you feel better soon.

Sure hope Bandit Boy is on the mend. You just never know what a pup will get into to. I'm very lucky that my Lucy only gets into the trash to shred paper. My granddog Dre ate a used diposable diaper last week...when he threw it up it looked like something from outer space...thank goodness he's doing fine now.

Oh little brother, glad you are on the mend. My mama gives me sage and probiotics when I eat something bad. But that diarrhea diet sounds better to me!
